For many years, conventional repair was the chosen method for repairing even small and soft dents. What is a conventional repair?
A conventional repair (on a smaller dent) is a repair performed at an auto body repair facility where the technician grinds the paint off in the damaged area to either weld a “stud” (small metal pin for pulling) or a weld tip slide hammer to the panel for pulling out the damage.
Once the majority of the metal is brought back up, multiple coats of body filler will be applied and sanded smooth to remove any remaining imperfections. Next, the panel will be primed and painted. Adjacent panels may also require paint work for color blending. Removal of parts such as mirrors, door handles, moldings, and bumpers will also be required to properly refinish the vehicle and then reinstalled after the paint has cured.
Conventional repair methods are the best way to repair a vehicle that has extensive damage or panels with paint damage. However on smaller damage these methods are very intrusive, expensive and time consuming.
PDR is a non intrusive method of repairing dents by pushing the dent back out with calculated pushes from a properly trained and skilled technician.

No. The most important factors in determining if a dent can be repaired by PDR are depth and location. Dents the size of a dinner plate or larger can be fixed successfully, as long as they are not too deep. On the other hand, some dents that are as small as a dime but very deep, cannot be fixed using PDR because the metal is too stretched. Cracked paint can also be an indication that a dent is too deep. The most common fixable dents are the size of a golf ball and smaller. 95% of minor dents can be repaired. About 5% of minor dents can’t be fixed due to depth or location. Areas such as some quarter panel opening lips, some forward areas of heavily braced hoods, or the very edges of some panels are examples of irreparable locations.

PDR is estimated in two ways:
HAIL DAMAGE is estimated in a matrix which factors dent size, dent count and location as well as other factors that determine repair cost for each panel on the vehicle. These types of repairs vary by severity and could range from a few hundred dollars to upwards of ten thousand dollars and may even end in a total loss of the vehicle.
DOOR DINGS AND DENTS are estimated in a Price a Dent matrix that also factors the overall size of the damage including the displaced area around the impact point. Depth and location also play a roll in the cost and repairability of the damage.
